This is my second-favorite hostel in New Zealand. It’s a quirky independent hostel with a huge kitchen, big common room, pool table, outdoor grill and patio, friendly staff, bike rentals, and a free sauna. In short, everything a backpacker or budget traveler would want from a hostel.
With this in mind, get to know how to live in a hostel by reading this quick guide. That way, you won’t be that annoying person rustling plastic bags at 4am that everyone wants to throw a shoe at. “Rest in peace” at the Tombstone Backpackers.
On Top Backpackers, the best party hostel in Dunedin, is a fun place to hang out. You can grab a beer at the hostel’s bar, make some new mates, and choose one of the many pool tables for a friendly game.
Or you can find out more per game. Plus it’s smack bang in the middle of Dunedin city. This less-touristed (than Queenstown) city on the south island’s Otago Peninsula has a load of beautiful Victorian and Edwardian architecture, some decent cycling trails and some really cool wildlife including albatrosses and penguins. It’s proud of its Scottish heritage, too (hence the name) – you may even get to try some haggis. Boasting New Zealand’s oldest university, its student population means a choice of cheap bars and eateries.

- They had high water pressure showers, clean bathrooms, thick walls (so you didn’t hear people at night), and two kitchens and large common room, making it easy to cook and meet people.

If you hadn’t guessed, this hostel has a spooky theme, which is apparent as you enter the hostel through a coffin-shaped door. A unique place to stay if you’re exploring the magnificent Marlborough Sounds or need to catch a ferry to the North Island. Plus, breakfast is free! (Freshly baked scones… Mmm…).

The Q2 offers so much for guests. In motorhome hire queenstown to an all-female dorm option, security here is good. And so is the location and the list of amenities. It’s logical to start in Auckland, the biggest city, and then work your way south – and the best overall hostel in Auckland is YHA Auckland, so you should check it out. Warm, welcoming, family-run – this purpose built Nelson backpackers hostel has a big selection of private rooms, which makes it good if you’re looking for a more hotel-y stay. When I travel overseas, the most common place people say they want to visit in New Zealand is Queenstown. I tell them it’s beautiful and they should go, and that one of the best things to do is go for a bike ride.
Since New Zealand is so expensive, shoulder season is one of the best times to visit. Get a campervan – Campervans litter New Zealand, especially on the nature-heavy South Island where people hike and camp because they serve as accommodation and transportation all wrapped up in one.
I had the best time visiting the North Island last year and doing many of the things you mentioned (Tongariro, Taupo, etc.) but I cannot cannot cannot wait to make it back and see the South. Tiny, out-of-the-way Stewart Island lies off the South Island at the very, very bottom of New Zealand. It’s a place where Kiwis have their summer homes and go to escape the hustle and bustle of, well, I guess Auckland. (There’s not too much hustle and bustle in New Zealand.) The town has maybe a dozen buildings; the coastline dotted with private homes and boats. During the winter months, the South Island (especially the are around Queenstown) has snow-covered mountains that offer some of the best skiing in the southern hemisphere.

About an hour and half north of Hokitika is one of the most famous landmarks on the West Coast, Punakaiki or “Pancake Rocks”. It’s a 20-minute loop walk around these limestone formations. And at 159 orchard road christchurch of the day, the tides splash up water through blowholes.
I found the colour of Lake Pukaki to be more amazing than Lake Tekapo but it’s not just the colour that makes this lake so impressive, at the far north of the lake is New Zealand’s tallest mountain, Mt Cook, in all its glory. Glacier walking might seem like an extreme sport (and it can be) but the professional guides and tour operators at Fox and Franz-Josef Glaciers make things a breeze. Guided tours include easy walks to the glacier terminal face, glacier valley walks, and heli-hiking, where you are transported high up the glacier for stunning views. Both glaciers are on the west coast of the South Island, in view of the mighty Mt Cook. The glaciers are less than 60 minutes drive from each other so there’s a good chance you can walk on both.
New Zealand has thousands of miles of hiking trails but sitting above them all are the nine Great Walks that journey through the country’s most magnificent places and iconic locations. On the North Island, the Lake Waikaremoana Track will take 3-4 days and will lead you through prehistoric rainforests and beautiful wildlife areas. The famous Tongariro Northern Circuit is a gruelling 3-4 day excursion where you’ll see active volcanoes, emerald lakes, and epic waterfalls. The South Island has its own unique routes, as well, including the Milford Track, which winds it way through the fjords of Milford Sound.
Amazing food, cool culture, great nature, and so much, Dunedin ticks all the boxes. I also mention some nice hotels with great reviews for each city individually; check my posts on the North Island and the South Island. Distances can be quite big and I, for some reason, compared New Zealand with Iceland, which is a much smaller island.
This national park is located in the southwest of the South Island and houses some of the most famous sights of New Zealand. Fiordland National Park is part of Te Wahipounamu and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. I was in New Zealand in the first two weeks of September (September 1 to 17) and the weather gets very cold once you hit South Island.

In the late 1980s, 18 black-footed ferrets were part of a captive-breeding program designed to increase their population. Now, there are 300–400 black-footed ferrets in the wild, all of which are descendants of those 18. They’re still threatened with extinction, since their main force of food, prairie dogs, are also rare, and their natural habitats keep getting destroyed by humans.
But if all islands are special for the development and emergence of new species, then what makes Luzon more special? The team puts it down to the island’s size – at more than 40,000 square miles, it’s larger than Cuba or Iceland – and because it has never been connected to the mainland. It seems islands are nature’s evolutionary laboratories, the places where natural selection runs wild. But even between islands, some are more spectacular than others.
Examples of species found on one island and nowhere else (known as island endemics) can be found almost anywhere we look. The lemurs on Madagascar are found nowhere else on Earth, the Galapagos islands are home to flightless cormorants and aquatic iguanas and there are even quirky examples of island species from across the British Isles such as the Scilly shrew or the Orkney vole. Islands are often examples of an evolutionary free for all, where a newly-introduced species may find itself in the perfect situation, whether that’s a new and different type of habitat and resources or even a complete lack of competitors and predators. Being introduced to an island ecosystem can turn a rather mediocre mainland species into a weird and wonderful new creation.
In the Galapagos, introduced goats outcompete tortoises for food, while snakes accidentally taken to Guam, where the birds had never seen a snake before, are destroying the fine balance of island ecosystems there. With pollution and hunting and the ever-increasing threat of climate change all also taking their toll, maybe nowhere are conservation efforts needed more than when dealing with unique island species. Even within this one island, high, forest-covered mountains then acted as “sky islands” – separate ecosystems cut off from the land below, with different evolutionary pressures. This in turn increased the likelihood for even further species diversity. From unusual mice that mainly hunt and eat earthworms, to other rodents with long elegant whiskers stretching the entire length of their bodies, Luzon is an incredible example of island evolution.
Because of their isolation and remote nature, the Channel Islands support fewer native animal species than similar habitats on the mainland. Species that reached the islands were aerial, such as birds and bats, or rafted across the water on debris and other material. Over time some vertebrate species evolved into distinct subspecies on the islands.
